Barker College

Finding innovative ways to maximise underutilised spaces is always a challenge, but at Barker College, the transformation of the undercroft beneath an overhead bridge has resulted in an exciting and dynamic play space. Designed to inspire junior students, this multi-level installation encourages movement, interaction, and creativity, turning a once-overlooked area into a hub of activity.

Project Overview

Budget (Equipment Only)
$150,000 – $180,000

Developed in collaboration with Umbaco Landscape Architects, the design offers a seamless transition between ground level and elevated play zones. A series of interconnected climbing elements create diverse pathways, allowing students to navigate up and down in multiple ways. At the heart of the space, a vertical rope tunnel vortex enables direct movement from the top to the bottom of the bridge, adding an extra dimension to the experience.

Carefully selected rope colours reflect Barker College’s school colours, ensuring the structure integrates harmoniously with its surroundings. In addition to active play elements, elevated seating pods provide spaces for students to gather, socialise, and take in the environment from a new perspective. Complementing the play space, an art wall by Scott Nagy adds a bold visual feature, further enhancing the area’s identity and appeal.

Through a considered design approach, this project has transformed a challenging space into a vibrant and engaging environment, proving that even the most complex briefs can lead to exceptional outcomes.
